  A recent study conducted by the University of Alberta, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was published in the Journal of Environmental Engineering, which showcased the use of Cypher’s UltraZyme Hydrocarbon product to remediate oil sands tailings.  Oil sands consist of a mixture of sand, water, clay and bitumen, and in Canada the deposits that are the largest and most widely developed are known as the Athabasca Oil Sands.  Although the most technologically advanced processes in the world are used to extract these Oil Sands deposits, there remains an accumulation of 1,075 million m^3 of tailings – enough to fill 430,000 Olympic sized swimming pools!  The research conducted by the U of A using UltraZyme has shown promising advances in the steps being taken to improve the processes involved in the remediation and recycling of these tailings. UltraZyme® Bioremediation with Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Salts

Salt-Tolerant Hydrocarbon-Degrading Microbial Consortium for Rapid Bioremediation in Soils Co-Contaminated with Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Salts   This study shows that UltraZyme® exhibits a significant tolerance to salts up to concentrations of 10% when degradable organics are readily available in the dissolved phase. When UltraZyme® is exposed to non-aqueous phase hydrocarbons, UltraZyme®’s salt tolerance decreases to 2.5%. However, 2.5% NaCl is still within or greater than the common ranges of salt concentrations encountered in hydrocarbon and salt-contaminated soils. For cases of high-salinity petroleum-contaminated soils and groundwater, we successfully isolated hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria adapted to 10% (w/v) NaCl. Our bioremediation experiment indicated that UltraZyme® exhibited a strong capability to degrade semi-volatile F2 hydrocarbons (>C10-C16). These hydrocarbons are a common environmental concern and must be remediated in soil environments. Cypher Helps in Colombia School Rebuilding Project   In the summer of 2011, Aliados Ambientales SAS and Cypher Environmental participated in rebuilding a local community school in Columbia. The project was initiated to bring radical change in the poor communities of the city and to improve living conditions. The building was located in one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods in the city. There was an immediate need to bring about change in the area to help children break the cycle of violence and conflict. One of the key requirements of the project was to create a school that was environmentally friendly and sustainable. It also required a supply of clean water and onsite wastewater treatment. Professionally tested by the top environmental test laboratory in Malaysia, UltraZyme® was analyzed and tested against competitors with outstanding results. Cypher Malaysia consented to conduct tests on contaminated sites, specifically by the Malaysian developer Taman Sri Manja. Hazardous contamination and foul odour was a continuous problem that they had been treating with other commonly used biological cleanup products. UltraZyme® was specified to be used to treat these ongoing problems to test the effectiveness in solving these unmanageable conditions. Prior to using UltraZyme® on the ponds, the H2S readings were 10 ppm to 20 ppm.
