Dust Stop Product Testing in Columbia - Cypher Environmental

Excellent Performance of Dust Stop® in Columbia   We recently conducted a demonstration of Dust Stop®’s ability to effectively control dust emissions of particulate matter. This demonstration took place in the COQUECOL Free Zone yard in the Municipality of Buenaventura, Valle Del Cauca, Colombia. The goal is to measure the difference in volume of coal piles with and without Dust Stop® application. Five samples were organized in 1.4m cubes which were open at the top and at the front. Coal was then placed into each cube at an approximate slope of 45%, effectively filling half of the volume of the cube. Three samples were sprayed with Dust Stop® at different dilution rates in water to show the performance of Dust Stop® at controlling dust emissions. Cypher Environmental is a global leader and provider of environmentally friendly solutions. It is our goal to produce and distribute products that are not harmful to … Read More

Dust Control and Dust Suppression on the Set of Heartland (TV)

Cypher EnvironmentalDust Stop, Dust Stop Projects, Featured Projects

Hollywood North Impressed with Dust Stop® Performance As a Location Manager in the Film and Television industry in Canada, it is my responsibility to handle the logistics of filming. One of the projects in 2007 was a C.B.C. TV series called “Heartland”. Our main set was located 3 km down a gravel road, where there are probably 10 acreages. Dust abatement was part of our agreement with the local M.D. office, so I started to look at different options. A water truck is the most common way that a Movie Company controls dust. Most shows are only in one area for a short period of time, but “Heartland” would last 5 1/2 months. The water truck would have been extremely expensive, and the water applied everyday to a road increases the need to grade the road. Oil was a very expensive option and it would have to be reapplied throughout … Read More

Cypher Environmental - The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum

Cypher Environmental recently participated in the CIM (Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum) Trade Show and Conference to showcase the wide range of environmental mining solutions they offer. As usual, Cypher had one of the busiest booths at the show as their sustainable technologies are in high demand to help meet the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) needs of mining companies around the world. CIM is a conference largely focused on Canadian mining, but there tends to be a growing international presence as Canadian technologies continue to play a pivotal role in the advancement of green mining. So much so, that at the event, Cypher’s President, Todd Burns, was invited to speak at the upcoming CAMESE (Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export) Green Mining Innovation Action Committee workshop in Sudbury, on June 17th, 2015. Pictured below is the General Director of Canmet Mining, Dr. Magdi Habib, who … Read More

Recognizing the Corrosion Threat Part II

CypherCypher Environmental, Dust Stop, News

In the first part of this two part blog entry, we highlighted how road salts cause corrosion to architecture and buildings. However, the level of corrosion caused by road salts is not only determined by the ingredients and distribution of particles, but also by the materials used in the construction of the architecture and buildings. Aluminium is considered a highly corrosive resistant material; mainly because of the protective oxide film used in its construction. Road salts, which contain chlorides, can easily penetrate this protective film and cause corrosion. The only way to prevent corrosion, apart from ensuring that only a product such as Dust Stop Liquid Concentrate is used for dust control and de-icing, is to regularly clean the surface and remove salt deposits. Aluminium corrosion is identified by a white or greyish dust forming on the surface of the metal. Although not the most significant contributor to the corrosion … Read More

Recognizing the Corrosion Threat Part I

CypherCypher Environmental, Dust Stop, News

It is widely recognized, through studies and testing, that the use of road salts causes significant corrosion problems for buildings and architecture. So undeniable is the evidence of road salt corrosion that potential damage is often estimated by using data from coastal architecture corrosion caused by natural sea salt. Basically, that means that comparing the weather and humidity in an area where road salts are used, to a similar coastal region, provides a real world model of how much damage results from the use of road salts. Similarly, it has been found that the use of magnesium chloride is a significant factor in the cause of truck, electrical systems and road concrete corrosion. Damage is not limited to architecture and buildings close to where road salts have been used, either. Moving vehicles, and especially heavy duty types, cause road salt mists to form in the air. These mists consist of … Read More

Road Salts Report

CypherDust Stop

It is bizarre, to say the least, that every year road salts are used for de-icing or to control dust pollution, given that the ingredients in these products causes significant environmental damage over prolonged periods of time. The ingredients in road salts can include sodium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride and magnesium chloride, among others. There are a number of ways that road salts can enter the wider environment and wreak havoc; many of which are unavoidable. For instance, road salts are widely dispersed in the environment through groundwater and soil absorption, which eventually contaminates plant and animal life with devastating effects. The potential damage to the environment, from the use of road salts, cannot be underestimated. Road salt contamination directly affects vegetation, flora and fauna; however, there is also a secondary effect. Elevated salt levels damage certain plant life while promoting the growth of others. This, in turn, impacts … Read More

Dangers of Road Dust

CypherDust Stop

The entire reason for dust control on roads, streets, and in industries and agricultural environments is to prevent pollution and contamination from dangerous chemicals and compounds. So, it begs the question: Why are the most frequently used products in this application – road salts – compounding the problem? In essence, by using road salts as dust control, we are replacing one hazardous pollutant with another. Road salts contaminate ground water, vegetation, plant and wild life, as well as cause corrosion to buildings and architecture. As a solution, it just does not make any sense. However, with that said, road dust is a serious problem and an effective solution is needed. Consider the amount of debris on our roads, then consider how under the constant weight of traffic, much of that debris is broken down into particles small enough for us to breathe in. These particles can contain elements of asbestos, … Read More
